Women’s organisations write to NCW demanding wider consultation on review of criminal law

To,

Rekha Sharma,
Chairperson,
National Commission for Women

Subject: Regarding Online Consultation on Review of Criminal Law

Dear Madam,

We, the undersigned women’s organisations have just learnt about a meeting called by the National Commission for Women (NCW) tomorrow for an Online Consultation on Review of Criminal Law. The NCW has not invited women’s organisations and feminist lawyers who have contributed so much to the discourse on women and law. Women’s organisations and movement has fought for many laws and legal reform. The Women’s Commission itself was created through persistent demand by women’s movement and several women’s organisations.

The present National Commission for Women has failed to recognise the crucial role of the national women organisations and movements and has refused to involve them in the discussion on such important matters.

We, therefore demand that NCW hold wider consultation with all stakeholders.
