From Kerala: Sunil P Elayidom, K Satchidanandan, Khadija Mumtaz, M B Rajesh and other progressive writers, thinkers and activists have released a statement condemning the sedition charges and FIRs filed against the 49 celebrities who wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July. The letter was written to draw the PM’s attention to the rising incidents of mob lynching in the country.

Raising our voice against violence cannot be seditious. And this is why more of us will speak every day. Against mob lynching. Against the silencing of people’s voices. Against the misuse of courts to harass citizens.

Text of the statement from Kerala condemning the harassment meted out to the 49 celebrities:

We are at such a juncture in our country today where citizens writing their worries to the Prime Minister has
also become seditious and unpatriotic.

One after the other, every single branch of our democracy is being brutally chopped right in front of our eyes.

Those who are trying to bury our dreams today are the same group of people who paraded in the dark when the
entire country was struggling for the light of independence and freedom.

It’s this same madness that has made them resist the open letter and register FIRs against the signatories.

We shouldn’t allow compromises in our fight towards a better democracy.

Death over surrender.

It is when they call us anti-nationals that we become true patriots.

We too sign under the very letter than irked you…

ഇന്ത്യയിലെ പൗരന്മാർ അവരുടെ പ്രധാനമന്തിയോട് ആവലാതികൾ
പറയുന്നത് പോലും രാജ്യദ്രോഹമായി തീരുന്ന ഒരു കാലം വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു.

ജനാധിപത്യത്തിന്റെ ചില്ലകളോരോന്നും നമ്മുടെ കൺമുന്നിൽ വെച്ച് വെട്ടി നുറുക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.

അവരുടെ സ്വപ്നങ്ങളേയും കൂരിരുട്ടിലടക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നത്.

അതിന്റെ ഉന്മാദത്തിലാണവർ സാംസ്കാരിക രംഗത്തെ പ്രമുഖർ
വളരെ സൗമ്യമായി പ്രധാനമന്ത്രിക്ക് അയച്ച കത്തിനെതിരെ ആക്രോശിച്ചതും
ഇപ്പോൾ അവർക്കെതിരെ കേസ്സെടുത്തതും.

ജനാധിപത്യം സംരക്ഷിക്കാനുള്ള പോരാട്ടം ഒരു ഒത്തുതീർപ്പിനും
ഇനി വഴങ്ങിക്കൂട.

കീഴടങ്ങുന്നതിനേക്കാൾ അഭികാമ്യം മരണമാണ്.

അവർ രാജ്യദ്രോഹിയെന്ന് വിളിക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് നാം യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ
രാജ്യസ്നേഹികളാകുന്നത്.

ഏതൊരു കത്താണൊ നിങ്ങളെ ഇത്രമേൽ പ്രകോപിപ്പിച്ചത് അതേ
